The Putorana Plateau, also called the Putorana Mountains, is a mountainous region in Russia. It consists of a large massif, or high plateau, crisscrossed by mountain ranges. The closest major settlement is Norilsk, a city with restricted access for foreign travelers, which is served by Alykel Airport. The area holds some of the world’s largest known nickel deposits.
This high plateau sits at the northwestern edge of the Central Siberian Plateau, east of the Yenisei River valley, between 67° and 70° north latitude. It lies southwest of the Anabar Plateau, north of the Syverma and Tunguska plateaus, and south of the North Siberian Lowland. Its main subranges include the Keta Range, Lontokoisky Kamen, Kharayelakh Range, Chaya-Ayan, Brus Kamen, and Lama Range. The highest peak is Mount Kamen, at 1,678 meters (5,505 feet), which is also the highest point of the Central Siberian Plateau. The climate is harsh and subarctic, sharply continental, with long, very cold winters and short, cool summers. Some lake valleys, like that of Lake Lama, have a milder microclimate because nearby ranges block northern winds. Higher elevations have a tundra climate. Spring, summer, and autumn occur only in June, July, and August; the rest of the year is winter, with temperatures between −32 °C (−26 °F) and −40 °C (−40 °F). July, the warmest month, averages around 8 °C (46 °F) and can reach 16 °C (61 °F). Precipitation ranges from 500 to 800 millimeters (20 to 31 inches), mostly falling as rain in summer. Winter snow cover is relatively thin.
The Putorana Nature Reserve, established in 1988 and run from Norilsk, covers about 1,887,251 hectares (4,663,500 acres), with a buffer zone of 1,773,300 hectares (4,382,000 acres). It was created to protect the world’s largest wild reindeer herd, as well as snow sheep. In July 2010, the reserve was added to the World Heritage List for containing a complete set of subarctic and arctic ecosystems within an isolated mountain range, including pristine taiga, forest-tundra, tundra, and arctic desert systems, along with untouched cold-water lake and river systems.
